Reducing Overly Promotional Page Posts in News Feed

Last Friday, Facebook announced that beginning in January 2015, people will see less promotional posts from Pages in their News Feeds. As part of an ongoing survey Facebook asked hundreds of thousands of people how they feel about the content in their News Feeds. People told Facebook they wanted to see more stories from friends and Pages they care about, and less promotional content.

Snapcash Could Bring Real Identity and Ad Targeting Data to Snapchat

Snapchat doesn’t ask for your real name, but its on the debit card you use for its new peer-to-peer payments feature Snapcash. That could prove very lucrative for the ephemeral messaging service. Snapchat has just overhauled its privacy policy to allow it to collect additional identity information about users of Snapcash.

Snapchat, Square Want to Make it Easy for You to Send Cash

Snapchat, known for sending photos that immediately disappear after being viewed, has teamed with payment processing service Square to help users send money to one another. The unusual pairing gives Snapchat a new feature its larger competitors like Twitter and Facebook can’t yet match.

Search All the Tweets! Twitter Now Indexed All the Way Back to 2006

Twitter gave its search function a major upgrade, indexing the hundreds of billions of public tweets sent since 2006, the company announced on Tuesday.  Previously, Twitter’s search feature was fairly perfunctory, returning what it calls “real-time” tweets that go back only about a week. The expanded search feature, that rolled out to users this past week, accesses an index of  roughly half a trillion documents.

Facebook Groups: Now There’s an App for That

Facebook is breaking out yet another feature into a standalone app. The social network rolled out Facebook Groups, an app to help users stay in touch with all of their Facebook groups and find new ones. The app functions as a hub for everything related to groups on Facebook. Upon launching the app, users see a list of the groups they belong to, with the most frequently viewed appearing first.

The Old Foursquare is Dead

The final traces of the old foursquare are being wiped from existence, as the new Foursquare is currently going out as an update to Windows Phone users. This summer, Foursquare made an announcement, to the shock of many, that it would be splitting its long-surviving check-in app into two separate applications: Swarm and Foursquare.

The number of internet users worldwide will surpass 3 billion in 2015, according to new figures from eMarketer, increasing 6.2% next year to reach 42.4% of the entire world’s population. This year, the internet will reach more than two in five people in the world for the first time as online audience hits 2.89 billion users globally.

You Can Now Share Tweets Using Twitter’s Direct Messages

Though it might seem like a feature that should’ve been in place already, the ability for Twitter users to share tweets of interest via the platform’s direct messages option is something the company just rolled out this week. Now when you see a specific tweet that you want to share privately, there are options other than simply retweeting it or quoting it within Twitter, Twitter says in a new blog post. Sharing tweets within Twitter? What a novel idea!
