Were You at the Doctors Office Today? SelectiveTweets Hacks Facebook Status

September 17, 2010

I thought it was just a glitch in the system that happened only to me today. The culprit? A widely used application called SelectiveTweets. You’ll recognize it by twitter posts tagged #FB tagged which the app syndicates to Facebook. The odd thing is I have never installed or used SelectiveTweets because I found the hashtag annoying. But it appeared on my Facebook status today. I quickly found out after my friends begin asking why I was at the doctors office today. Huh?

With a quick Twitter search I discovered I am not alone. Many of us were at the doctors office today according to Facebook.

This leads me to question Facebook’s security and my privacy particularly when it comes to apps. It’s a good time to clean up here’s what I did to protect my profile.

  1. Remove SelectiveTweets from your Facebook applications by going into Account>Application Settings
  2. Change your password
  3. Clean up apps in Twitter (I did not find SelectiveTweets in there, only in Facebook but it’s a good precaution)
  4. Change your Twitter password
