Which Media Budgets Are Being Cannibalized to Fund Video Ad Spending?

September 15, 2014

Ad buyers are most likely to be drawing from display budgets to fund spending increases in the next 12 months, with broadcast and cable TV also under the gun. Interestingly, unlike agencies, trading desks and ad networks, brands are more likely to be cannibalizing cable than broadcast TV budgets, as there has been a significant increase from last year’s results in the proportion of brands that will be drawing video ad budgets from cable TV. Also of note, brands are more likely to be pulling funds this year from display and search, but less likely to be diverting funds from print.

Facebook announces Facebook Media — a hub for media outlets and others

For advertisers looking for support or guidance, there is Facebook for Business. Now, for members of the media (as well as public figures and other organizations like nonprofits), there’s Facebook Media. The social network today announced Facebook Media, a similar resource for media outlets looking for more efficient ways to utilize Facebook.

Why Venture Capitalists Are Pumping Millions into Anonymous Social Apps

In 2014 alone, Whisper, Secret, and Yik Yak, three young smartphone apps for exposing your private thoughts anonymously, have collectively raised more than $80 million. It’s a staggering figure for such a high-risk market and the hype is dividing the venture community into believers and skeptics, but those forking over the cash are caught up in the novelty of it, betting this is the next iteration of social networking.

Updates to Facebook for iOS 8

Facebook for iOS 8 will have an improved experience for people who want to share content from other apps to Facebook. By simply tapping the share icon and selecting Facebook, you can choose to share a link to a website from your browser, photos or videos from your camera roll, and content from other apps. Facebook for iOS 8 will have an updated share screen similar to what you already see in the Facebook app. From there, you can select the audience you want to share with, add a location, say what you’re doing, or tag friends.

Taco Bell Lives Más on Instagram

In preparation for their breakfast line launch, Taco Bell turned to Instagram to build awareness of their new menu items among 18-44 year-olds. The brand’s creative team produced a series of sponsored photos depicting breakfast among friends, each image capturing the brand’s youthful, free-spirited ethos through natural staging and a retro, sun-bleached color palette.

Twitter Overhauls Profiles on iOS in the ‘Biggest Update to Date’

Twitter updated its iPhone app with completely redesigned profiles on Thursday. The new profiles emphasize users’ bios, photos and favorited tweets — in addition to their own tweets. The redesigned profiles include three tabs: tweets, photos and favorites. The photos tab displays images you have tweeted, while favorites surfaces tweets you have favorited. User bios are also immediately surfaced in the profile view; previously, you had to swipe across the top of a person’s header image to view his or her bio.

News Feed FYI: Showing More Timely Stories from Friends and Pages

Facebook’s goal with News Feed is to show everyone the right content at the right time so they don’t miss the stories that are important to them. The company received feedback that there are some instances where a post from a friend or a page you are connected to is only interesting at a specific moment. There are also times when a post that is a day or two old may not be relevant to you anymore. Facebook’s latest update to News Feed ranking looks at two new factors to determine if a story is more important in the moment than other types of updates. These changes include factoring in trending topics and looking at when people like or coming on a post.

Twitpic Says it Won’t be Shutting Down After All

September 18, 2014

Two weeks after saying it would be forced to shut down because of a trademark conflict with Twitter, image-hosting service Twitpic said today that it will live on. The company has been acquired, though in a tweet it would not say by whom. Earlier this month, Twitpic founder Noah Everett said Twitter had contacted the company demanding it abandon its trademark application or have its API access revoked. Twitter responded by saying that it had no issue with Twitpic retaining its name but had objected to other, unspecified “trademarks tied to the brand.”

The attributes that best define customer centricity are a senior management team committed to understanding the customer, functional alignment in support of a holistic customer experience strategy and a corporate culture that prioritizes customer satisfaction, according to a new study from the CMO Council and SAP. It appears that the key challenges across people, processes and platforms are mostly related to the following organizational attributes: the biggest gap organizations are said to need to fill is a culture that focuses on the customer and values customer experience strategy. Team alignment and the establishment of processes that track to customer experience strategy are also areas that can help drive success.

What We’re Watching

In early September WordPress 4.0 was released with platform enhancements for admins and developers. They’ve named the update “Benny” and you can get a great overview of what to expect including some great new features impacting social marketers like the ability to preview embeddable content (YouTube videos and Tweets).
